Providence, RI - With Rhode Island’s taxpayers and economic outlook in mind, House Republicans will submit an amendment to the FY20 budget to preserve the promised reduction of the Rhode Island sales tax from 7% to 6.5%. The amendment restores all stricken language that specified a reduction of the sales tax upon the expansion of revenues through online taxed items. This occurred when online sales were added to the tax base. Republicans have been calling for the promised sales tax reduction throughout this legislative session.
Providence, RI - House Republicans continue the fight for good government in Rhode Island, and just scored a big win for the taxpayer in the proposed FY20 budget: the establishment of restricted receipts accounts for E911 surcharge fees on phone bills. A longtime Republican initiative, this year’s bill H5374 codified restricted receipt accounts. This bill was sponsored by Representatives Jack Lyle, Michael Chippendale,David Place, Robert Quattrocchi, George Nardone. Sherry Roberts, Justin Price, Brian C Newberry, and Leader Blake A. Filippi. To comply with federal requirements, the surcharges on phone bills will be split into two separate charges, one to support E911 operations and another for funding other public safety needs. Both will go into restricted receipt accounts.
Providence, RI - Today, the House Republican Caucus calls on the House of Representatives, the Senate and the Governor to seek a R.I. Constitution, Art. X, Sec. 3, Supreme Court advisory opinion concerning the legality of H.B. 5241 and S.B. 37, which purport to authorize online sports betting – without first obtaining voter approval. The bills purportedly allow mobile wagers to be placed statewide so long as the customer first registers on-site at Twin River’s Lincoln or Tiverton facilities.
Providence, RI - Newly elected Representatives Lyle, Nardone, and Place will be introducing two pieces of legislation that would establish an Office of Inspector General and a constitutional amendment granting the governor the power to utilize a line-item veto in the state budget.
