Seeks to disincentivize corporate buy up of Rhode Island’s limited Housing Stock
State House, Providence – Currently, in the United States, private equity backed corporations such as American Homes 4 Rent and Innovation Homes are buying up single family homes at an alarming rate. While this is not a new phenomenon, given the current economic and housing market conditions, these buy ups have exacerbated many of the financial woes held not only by Rhode Islanders, but Americans nationwide.

State House, Providence – The median price for a single-family home in Rhode Island hit a record high of $443,000 in July 2023, and most recently was reported to have risen to $450,000. Despite two significant housing packages that passed the General Assembly in 2022 and 2023, there is no relief in sight for the housing crisis in Rhode Island. Further, exacerbating the crisis, rental unit vacancies in Rhode Island remain historically low, further driving up the cost of housing as rental units can charge more due to limited inventory. Nationally, including Rhode Island, single family homeownership rates have declined, returning to 1980 levels.

State House, Providence, RI – In response to a public statement by Governor Daniel McKee alluding to the possible influx of illegal migrants who entered the country bypassing our immigration laws, House Minority Leader Michael Chippendale and Senate Minority Leader Jessica de la Cruz requested a meeting with the Governor in early January of 2024. The purpose of the meeting was to seek clarification on the Governor’s plan should a large group of migrants arrive at our doorstep and a definitive answer or repudiation as to Rhode Island’s status as a “sanctuary state.”

State House, Providence – The impact inflation is having on full service meal prices, compounded with the state’s meal and beverage tax, may be a disincentive to patrons from dining out—this on top of the recent transportation hurdles Rhode Islanders are facing with the Washington Bridge closure. These circumstances are hurting businesses as well as local economies.
