In June 2022, Michael W. Chippendale (R) was unanimously elevated by his peers in the House Republican Caucus to serve as the Minority Leader after Leader Blake Filippi announced his resignation to pursue his lawsuit against the Joint Committee on Legislative Service (JCLS). The lawsuit contends that millions of dollars in hiring and spending decisions made by the five-member leadership panel – of which Filippi, as minority leader, was a member – are illegal because he was routinely excluded.  Chippendale will now represent the caucus on that important, powerful committee.  He served two terms as the Minority Whip, the second highest ranking position in the caucus.

First elected to office in November 2010, Leader Chippendale represents the residents of District 40, which includes western Coventry (Greene), Foster, and the majority of Glocester. He serves as an active member of four House standing committees, which include Oversight (reviews the operation and efficiency of various state agencies, and fulfills the separation of powers legislative role); Corporations (handles matters relating to financial institutions, business regulation, property, casualty and health insurance, technology, telecommunications and consumer protection); Conduct (based on findings, recommends peer disciplinary action); Innovation, Internet and Technology (considers all matters relating to new technologies).

Leader Chippendale is a respected champion for lowering all taxes and is an effective and passionate advocate for streamlining government functions. His legislative mission is to make Rhode Island a more economically attractive state for residents and businesses. This includes: assisting the business community by sponsoring legislation targeting regulation reforms; supporting legislative efforts to create an attractive economic climate; saving our public education system and supporting relevant jobs training through our state colleges and university. Chippendale is also a staunch proponent of 2nd Amendment rights, recently co-sponsoring a legislative commission to address mental illness factors in firearms purchases.

During the 2022 legislative sessions, the Republican Caucus moved the needle on a number of important state government issues on behalf of Rhode Island’s hardworking taxpayers.  Please click here to view the RI House Minority Report: 2022 Legislative Session Recap for an impressive list of caucus accomplishments.

Leader Chippendale is a retired self-employed real estate investor and property manager. Prior to his vocation in real estate, he owned and operated two custom manufacturing business, making him keenly aware of the regulatory and tax burdens Rhode Island’s small businesses must deal with to survive. Chippendale is a former Religious Education Instructor at St. Paul the Apostle Church. Currently, he volunteers his time coaching and assisting with local youth athletics is a former board member of the Foster/Glocester Juvenile Hearing Board and is a member of the Highland Rod and Gun Sportsman Club.

As a life-long Rhode Islander, Leader Chippendale graduated from Johnston High School, studied at CCRI, and in 1989 received an associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Design from New England Institute of Technology.  In 2004, he obtained a degree in Business Management from Johnson & Wales University.

Chippendale resides in Foster with his wife Sherri and two children, Paige, a senior at the URI College of Nursing and Séighín, a licensed heavy equipment operator.

2019 RI Freedom Index Legislator Scorecard

The 2019 Freedom Index was created by the RI Center for Freedom & Prosperity. The Freedom Index examines a legislator's voting record in terms of their likely effect on the free market, the size and scope of government, the balance of residents' interests against those of public employees and beneficiaries, and the constitutional structure of government over the people it represents. In the Rhode Island General Assembly, 95 pieces of legislation were analyzed from the 2019 legislative session. The membership of the House Republican Caucus ranked in the top fifteen of Rhode Island General Assembly legislators (there are 110) who consistently vote for liberty in the State of Rhode Island.

About rhode island house republicans

In 1636, Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, established the first working model of Democracy after being banished from Massachusetts for his “extreme views” concerning freedom of speech and religion. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams publicly acknowledged Williams as the originator of these concepts, along with the freedom of public assembly, in the First Amendment in the United States Constitution. Today, Rhode Island House Republicans uphold the liberties designed by our Founders and preserved in our Constitution, and are the primary legislative body promoting lean government, fighting for lower taxes, and advocating for initiatives and policies that improve the economy and in turn, the lives of Rhode Islanders.  As members of a part-time assembly, we are small business owners, retired educators, community activists, lawyers, farmers, military service veterans, volunteers, former local officials, retired social workers, coaches, musicians, churchgoers and board directors -- bringing these community engagement and professional experiences to our work, on your behalf, at the Rhode Island State House.
