ABOUT REP. MICHAEL W. CHIPPENDALEIn December 2024, Michael W. Chippendale (R) was unanimously re-elected by his peers in the House Republican Caucus to serve a second term as the Minority Leader. This will also be his second term serving as the Secretary for the Joint Committee on Legislative Services (JCLS), a powerful administrative body. Prior to being elevated to his role as Leader, Chippendale served two terms as the Minority Whip, the second highest ranking position in the caucus.
During his term as Leader, Chippendale has been the recipient of numerous recognitions, including being named the 2023 and 2024 Legislator of the Year by the RI State Conservation Committee; the recipient of the John E. Fogarty Award for advancing the rights of persons with disabilities; selected by the Council of State Governments for the 2024 Henry Toll Fellowship; chosen to participate in the Rodel America Program; and was bestowed the revered title of "Kentucky Colonel", commissioned by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. First elected to office in November 2010, Leader Chippendale represents the residents of District 40, which includes western Coventry (Greene), Foster, and the majority of Glocester. Over his years in the legislature, he has served on the following House committees: Oversight; Judiciary; Corporations; Environment and Natural Resources; Innovation, Internet and Technology; Labor, Conduct, and Rules. As House Minority Leader, he is an ex-officio member of all standing committees and actively participates and votes on crucial matters. Leader Chippendale is a respected champion for lowering all taxes and is an effective and passionate advocate for streamlining government functions. His legislative mission is to make Rhode Island a more economically attractive state for residents and businesses. This includes: assisting the business community by sponsoring legislation targeting regulation reforms; supporting legislative efforts to create an attractive economic climate; saving our public education system and supporting relevant jobs training through our state colleges and university. Chippendale is also a staunch proponent of 2nd Amendment rights, recently co-sponsoring a legislative commission to address mental illness factors in firearms purchases. During the 2023/24 legislative session, the Republican Caucus moved the needle on a number of important state government issues on behalf of Rhode Island’s hardworking taxpayers, for example, successfully championing significant Medicaid accountability budget changes, saving the state hundreds of millions of dollars. Leader Chippendale is a retired self-employed real estate investor and property manager. Prior to his vocation in real estate, he owned and operated two custom manufacturing business, making him keenly aware of the regulatory and tax burdens Rhode Island’s small businesses must deal with to survive. Chippendale is a former Religious Education Instructor at St. Paul the Apostle Church. Currently, he volunteers his time coaching and assisting with local youth athletics is a former board member of the Foster/Glocester Juvenile Hearing Board and is a member of the Highland Rod and Gun Sportsman Club. As a life-long Rhode Islander, Leader Chippendale graduated from Johnston High School, attended CCRI, then entered the Electro-Mechanical Drafting/Engineering Program at New England Institute of Technology, receiving his degree in 1989. He re-entered college in 2004 at Johnson and Wales University, studying business management. Chippendale resides in Foster with his wife Sherri and daughter, Paige, a registered nurse.
