STATE HOUSE  —  On Friday, August 18, 2017 at 10:30 a.m., House Minority Leader Patricia Morgan (R-District 26 Coventry, Warwick, West Warwick) will hand out free backpacks to incoming kindergarteners at the John F. Horgan Elementary School, who are preparing for their first day of school.

This is the 15th year the National Foundation for Women Legislators has partnered with the Office Depot Foundation for the Backpack Program. Each year, the program has continued to grow, with more and more elected women participating, and this year Rhode Island has been included, with the Program providing Representative Morgan with 150 backpacks for distribution for the 2017 back-to-school season.

“As a former teacher, I know what the first day of school is like, for students and parents.  The first day of school is one of the most powerful, happy and nervous days of a child's life, and I want to help make that day extra special for West Warwick students some of whom are among the neediest families in our town. I'm happy to help with this backpack event.” said Rep. Morgan.

Nicole L’Etoile, Principal of the John F Horgan Elementary School said, “This summer the school has been holding a get-ready-for school program for incoming kindergarteners, and they will be ‘graduating’ from the program on August 18th.  This is a perfect time to present them with their new backpacks, ready for the first day of school.  We are thankful to Minority Leader Morgan for making this wonderful event a reality for our students, who I know, will appreciate this great start to the school year.”

Representative Morgan added, “This opportunity will not be limited to just kindergarteners. Principal L’Etoile and I will make sure that each of the 150 backpacks are given out to needy and deserving students at John F. Horgan Elementary School.”

The program will take place at John F. Horgan Elementary School, West Warwick, RI, beginning at 10:30 and last until 11:30 AM.

About rhode island house republicans

In 1636, Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, established the first working model of Democracy after being banished from Massachusetts for his “extreme views” concerning freedom of speech and religion. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams publicly acknowledged Williams as the originator of these concepts, along with the freedom of public assembly, in the First Amendment in the United States Constitution. Today, Rhode Island House Republicans uphold the liberties designed by our Founders and preserved in our Constitution, and are the primary legislative body promoting lean government, fighting for lower taxes, and advocating for initiatives and policies that improve the economy and in turn, the lives of Rhode Islanders.  As members of a part-time assembly, we are small business owners, retired educators, community activists, lawyers, farmers, military service veterans, volunteers, former local officials, retired social workers, coaches, musicians, churchgoers and board directors -- bringing these community engagement and professional experiences to our work, on your behalf, at the Rhode Island State House.
