STATE HOUSE – Representative Doreen M. Costa (R-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter) invites the public to a ceremony officially renaming the West Davisville Road Bridge as the Second Lieutenant Matthew Coutu Memorial Bridge on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m.
The bridge runs over Route 403 between West Davisville Road and Compass Circle.
Coutu, who hailed from North Kingstown, was killed on June 27, 2005 by small-arms fire when his convoy was attacked in Baghdad. He was 23 years old. Costa sponsored Bill H-6185 to rename the bridge. The measure passed the House of Representatives unanimously on May 29 in the presence of Coutu’s mother, Donna. “Losing a child is never easy. Donna has shown a great deal of courage and resilience in the years since her son’s death. Naming this bridge after Matthew is just one simple way for us as a community to remember him and his ultimate sacrifice,” said Costa. -30-
