Providence, RI - House Republicans voted Wednesday to elevate Rep. Blake Filippi (District 36) to the position of Minority Leader. Filippi, who previously served as Minority Whip, has distinguished himself as an ardent defender of individual liberties, government reform, and the small business community in Rhode Island.

“We must restore confidence in our government. As minority leader, I will work to advance legislation that will bring lasting prosperity to Rhode Island. I am honored to come back to the capital and serve the good people of Rhode Island. It’s time for fresh ideas and a new way forward for our state. It is my promise to citizens across the state that House Republicans will put their priorities and principles first.”

Republicans also elected Michael Chippendale, who has served since 2010, as Minority Whip. Rep. Chippendale previously served as an instrumental member of the House Oversight Committee, where he led the investigation into the UHIP scandal. Whip Chippendale has also been a champion of fiscal responsibility and government accountability.

Whip Chippendale commented, saying: “I look forward to working with Leader Filippi. As a small businessman, thoughtful legislator, and trusted colleague, I know he will make an excellent leader who will skillfully guide our caucus forward.”
Since 2014, Leader Filippi has served in the House of Representatives as a member of the Republican caucus. He has been a constant voice for ‘good government’ initiatives.
