The event, which celebrates India’s Independence Day, will feature a parade, food festival, cultural programs and a children’s fashion show on the grounds on the south side of the State House. The festivities, which will showcase a variety of performances such as traditional folk dances, classical dances, contemporary dances and Bollywood dances, begin at 4 p.m.
“It is an honor to be chosen as the guest speaker for this celebration,” said Representative Lancia. “I have a deep appreciation for Indian culture, as well as the contributions that emigrants from India have had on Rhode Island society. I look forward to celebrating those contributions and that culture on Saturday.” Independently incorporated in 1980, the India Association of Rhode Island’s goal has been to provide an authentic and sincere image of India and its culture to the citizens of Rhode Island. The organization serves over 3,000 families of Indian origin living in Rhode Island and in the surrounding communities. However, membership is not limited to those of Indian origin, but is open to anyone interested in the social and cultural heritage of India. Independence Day, which is celebrated annually on Aug. 15, commemorates the nation's independence from the United Kingdom on Aug. 15, 1947. |
