REP. NARDOLILLO CALLS FOR THE ELIMINATION OF FRONT LICENSE PLATES

Providence, RI - State Representative Robert Nardolillo III (R District 28 – Coventry) will introduce legislation to eliminate the requirement for a front license plate on vehicles registered in Rhode Island.

The State of Rhode Island has been issuing license plates since 1904 but has not always required drivers to display two on each vehicle. Since its implementation, the law has sparked debate between drivers, law enforcement, and public safety officials. To date, nineteen states do not require a front plate and there have been calls in other New England states as recently as 2017 to eliminate the mandate.

Early estimates show the state could save up to $2 million by not issuing front plates to vehicles registered in Rhode Island. Rep. Nardolillo’s bill would also call for the state to use any savings from eliminating the front license plate requirement be used for scholastic investments.

“This is not just about reducing the cost to own a car in our state. This is about spending our money wisely and investing in our future,” said Rep. Nardolillo.
