Representative Doreen Costa Wants Rhode Islanders Waiting for Income Tax Refund Checks Paid Interest6/13/2016

STATE HOUSE -- Representative Doreen Costa (R-District 31 North Kingstown, Exeter) has drafted a bill to require the state of Rhode Island to pay interest to any taxpayer who was forced to wait for his or her income tax refund check.
The bill states that for all 2015 income tax refunds due to taxpayers, which are not paid by June 30th, 2016, interest shall be paid to these taxpayers at the rate of 12% interest, payable for each day their refunds are late.
“When a taxpayer is late paying their taxes, the state charges him or her 18% interest on the money owed,” said Costa. “I am trying to build fairness, on behalf of my constituents and all Rhode Islanders, into our state’s legal system. If the state can taketh, the state can payeth. I am positive every taxpayer out there agrees with me that if the state can levy a penalty, in way of interest, against them for a late tax payment, then the taxpayer should have the legal right to levy the very same penalty against the state. Rhode Islanders live within a democratic system, not a dictatorship, right?” -30-
