State House, Providence, RI - The Rhode Island House of Representatives today passed “The Civic Literacy Act”, requiring young adults to demonstrate proficiency in civics education before high school graduation. The bill is sponsored by Representative Brian C. Newberry (District 48, North Smithfield/Burrillville).

State House, Providence – Today, Rhode Island House Republican Whip Michael W. Chippendale sent the attached letter to Speaker Joseph K. Shekarchi and Senate President Dominick J Ruggerio. Chippendale is requesting corrective action to accommodate disabled students in the proposed legislation to make the RI Promise Scholarship Program permanent.

The Republican plan will: 1) establish Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), which are restricted receipt accounts, funded by tax and CARES Act dollars, but managed by families, to provide additional education tools and home schooling to students in districts without in-person learning; and 2) to provide public school choice to parents of any school that fails to provide in-person learning despite a state determination it is safe to do so.
